The law of attraction is the hot topic in the personal development world at the moment after the release of countless books and movies such as “What The Bleep Do We Know” and ‘The Secret”. As such, there is a lot of talk about the law of attraction, and how it applies to every day life, and people are trying continually to master it to gain its powerful benefits in their lives. This article will attempt to explain the law of attraction in an easy to understand manner. While the principle itself can be at times difficult to fully grasp, I will hopefully allow you to take away at least a fundamental understanding of this principle and how it can be applied to every day life.
So what is the law of attraction? Despite only being popularized recently, the law of attraction is an ancient principle that has been understood by certain groups of individuals for hundreds of years. The law of attraction basically states that as you sow, so you shall reap. Every action has a reaction and so everything you do each day has a processional effect that will manifest in your life in the future. In other words, LIKE attracts LIKE. If you give kindness you will receive kindness back and if you give anger you will receive anger back; not necessarily instantaneously, but in time, what you give, or put out, will inevitably be returned to you in one form or another.
While this began as a kind of mystical theory so many years ago, believed only by the more enlightened, it is today being proven to be a physical, scientific reality…
Bare with me for a moment, cause we’re about to get into the hardcore stuff… At a basic level, beyond the molecules and atoms and matter that makes up our universe, there is energy. The tiniest atom is nothing more than a fluctuation of energy and information. That means everything we see, hear, feel, smell, touch is just that, a bundle of energy.
Now, think about this…
As humans, when we think, we release energy. You will no doubt have heard of scientists studying “brainwaves”. Brainwaves are the energy we release when we think. Scientists have discovered that different thoughts release different types and levels of energy. And of course you will have experienced this for yourself right? You walk into a party and you feel the energy is dull and lifeless. This is because the people in the room are sending out those brainwaves. Maybe they aren’t in the best moods, or aren’t connecting with one another and so their energy or brainwaves reflect their thoughts and feelings. So what happens when we release these energy fields from our heads? They interact with the energy fields of the world, the energy fields that are everything else in our environment. And most importantly not only do they interact… they INFLUENCE! What happens when you walk into the low energy room? You feel your energy drop too right? You feel a bit dull, bored, lifeless etc. See what’s happened? The brainwaves or energy of the people in the room influenced you; they CREATED your emotional state or your experience of that party. When people ask you “How was the party?, you will say it was boring and dull. The energy of the people at that party CREATED your experience of the party.
Do you see the power of this? If this is true then it means that with our thoughts we have the power to influence our environment. The people who met you at the party would have recalled you as being dull and boring too because they were in that state and giving off that energy before you even got there. Those people with their boring and dull energy ATTRACTED boringness and dullness…
Let’s assume this is true and look at another example:
Last year I was watching Australia play in the quarter finals of the world cup. Australia hadn’t even qualified for a world cup in many years so to see them lose in a controversial manner in such an important game really got my blood boiling. I was furious. I had followed the team through their whole world cup journey and now they were going home because of a stupid bad call. I got in my car at 4am in the morning and drove home angrily… I wasn’t driving home particularly aggressively but about half way home I looked in my rear view mirror and saw a camera flash… Speeding ticket! Of course my anger increased…
What do you think? Are the speeding ticket and my anger related? Did I ATTRACT the bad experience (or the negative energy) because of the negative energy (the anger) I was so intensely putting out? Did like attract like here…?
Here’s the kicker:
Most of the world’s religions accept that we are created in the likeness of some higher power; that there is an infinite and eternal force that we are both in and of that permeates all of creation. Call it Zen, the Tao, God, higher power, whatever name it is given, such a power or energy does exist.
As humans it is recognized that being of this energy, we bear a certain connection to this energy. It is a connection to this energy that allows experiences like clairvoyance, a feeling of effortless ‘flow’ in sporting competition, telepathy, and acts of intense creativity such as the composition of intricate symphonies by the DEAF composer Beethoven.
The point is, there is a force that connects us all. Separatedness is an illusion; in fact we are all one. We are all parts of a united whole. We are all (living and non living beings alike) fields of energy in an infinite field of energy…
That means me and the police man who took a photo of my speeding vehicle are ONE! Me and the ‘event’ of having that photo taken are one…Me and my entire experience of reality are ONE… Me and ANYTHING that I perceive through my 5 senses on a daily basis are ONE! This ONE is my world, my experience of reality.
It’s not even the case that me and the outside world are separate and when I create something within myself it manifests in the world as though the two are different variations of reality… When something happens in me, a thought, feeling, action or visualization, it IS the world. I AM the world! But it’s not just me, YOU are the world too!
The external world IS my cosmic body, it is an extension of my physical body. It’s all the SAME! You cannot do anything in your mind, that doesn’t show up in your ‘external’ (externalness being an illusion) reality because they are THE SAME! But it gets better…
Not only are we one with the world, we hold the key to the creation of every aspect of the world… The Buddha knew this thousands of years ago: He said “With our thoughts we make our world”… it’s only now we are realizing that this is a very literal statement.
Mind, consciousness, or thought, is the creator of matter… We fall into the trap of thinking that matter creates mind… that things in our external reality influence the way we think and feel… that we REACT to our environment. In fact, it is the complete opposite. Our mind influences matter, our thoughts CREATE matter… our brainwaves MATERIALISE into our environment!
Don’t believe me? I’m sure you’ve heard of the placebo effect?
The placebo effect is the phenomenon where someone with a disease can be given a pill that is completely inert ie by science it should have no effect on their condition, but if they are told and believe that the pill is a curative one, it has the effect that their mind THINKS it should have even though the pill itself has NO such ability! Their beliefs (consistent thoughts) created the curative reaction in their bodies… NOT the pill itself! In other words, their thoughts created their reality! This has been proven over and over again and is an accepted principle in scientific testing.
Do you see where this is going…
It means we are perpetually CREATING our world, our lives, and our experiences with everything we do and EVERY THOUGHT we think. The thoughts ARE our world. The thought IS the experience! There is no differentiation between inner and outer!
And we can’t avoid this! No one is exempt! Every person creates their reality with their thoughts whether they like it or not. Someone could even say that they don’t believe in the law of attraction and if they truly think it, things they think about WON’T manifest in their life… it will manifest according to their thoughts and hence still fulfill the law they don’t even believe!
The law of attraction is a powerful principle that must be understood in order to achieve true happiness in our lives. You will learn more about the law of attraction and how to apply it in your everyday life for ultimate success in the coming articles. Good luck!
